Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp. baking soda
- ¼ tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp. ground cloves
- 1 tsp. ground ginger
- ¾ cup Crisco shortening or ½ cup shortening + ¼ cup butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar + another 1/3 cup sugar for coating
- ¼ cup molasses
- 1 beaten egg

- Preheat Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Prepare Dry Ingredients:
- In a medium bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, and ground ginger. Set aside.
- Cream Shortening and Sugar:
- In a large bowl, cream together the shortening (or shortening + butter combination) and 1 cup of granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Incorporate Wet Ingredients:
- Beat in molasses and the beaten egg into the shortening/sugar mixture until well combined.
- Stir in Dry Ingredients:
- Gradually stir in the dry ingredients, mixing well to form a smooth cookie dough.
- Roll and Coat:
- Roll small balls of cookie dough and dip each ball in the additional 1/3 cup of sugar, coating it evenly.
- Arrange on Baking Sheet:
- Place the sugar-coated balls 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet or line the sheet with parchment paper.
- Bake:
- Bake for 13-15 minutes or until the tops of the cookies start to crackle.
